TREVOR HAUGHTON AND TONY BREVETT WITH CHRIS BONAFIDE NOV '08 IN SOLCAL
This legendary Rock Steady group has endured through the Reggae Music genre for more than four decades since it’s founding in the lower side of Greenwich Farm in the capital city of Kingston, Jamaica W.I. Covering such a large span of time entertaining people all over the world, is an apt name for a music group - The Melodians.
With hit songs after hit songs, The Melodians have been rocking the post independent Jamaican society with tunes like “You’re gonnah loose”, “Sweet Sensation”, “You have caught me”, “I’ll get along without you now”, “Come on Little Girl Com On”, "You don’t need me” and much more. Working during the mid ‘60’s with veteran studio engineers, Sir Clement “Coxzone” Dodd from Studio One and with Treasure Isle’s Duke Reid in early 1967, the Jamaican music charts were flooded with top-chart tune from this versatile group.
Their recent appearance at The Saint Rocke venue in Hermosa Beach California brought a splendid showcase to the people of the beach-line residents who surprisingly sang along to many of their tunes, bringing the awareness of The Melodians' music by the unexpected. They were backed by another legendary band, “The Yellow Wall Band” which opened the showcase. While rocking everyone, The Yellow Wall Band lead singer and bassist
Manas Itene(right) went on with a very great performance to close with a perfect melody called “ Glad We Come Over” which all delightfully sang along.
The Melodians, a once trio group due to the death of their well known partner Brent Dowe who left the group’s two other founding members,
Tony Brevett(right) [Brother of The Skatakite’s bassist Lloyd Brevett] and the legendary
Trevor Haughton(right) to pick up the pieces and to move with more of their cabaret-style showcase performances, grooving the patrons with their famous “Rivers of Babylon” and “Down here in Babylon” and the many above mentioned tunes.
They went north the following night to cheer up the residents of another beachfront location in California. The Melodians Trevor Haughton and Tony Brevett enter the stage after being opened ip again by The Yellow Wall Band, Alton “Sandrum” Vanhorn-Drums, Everton Price on Keyboard and Mama Itene on vocals and Bass. With cheers from the crowd of the vunue. Many outsiders on the pier could hear it all around The Santa Monica Pier. Here they were requested to play at a private party at ‘The Rusty Surf Ranch’, a splendid upscale venue right on the pier. Veteran reggae archivist Roger Stephan, who gave the patrons and visitors a clean insight on the history of The Melodians, hosted the show. Here they, The Melodians went on to do what they do best and have been doing ever since their debut 43 year ago. The many hits came one after the other until that time came for them to leave the stage. This was not so easy for the crowd because they were so please with such a splendid showcase that they requested a speedily return of one of Jamaica’s longest standing music group.
The show was so much of a treat that The Melodians stayed with the crowd to delightfully rapport with their supporters without any second thoughts or reservations. Both members sat and entertained everyone who stayed until closing, answering questions and signing picture and autographs; unlike many celebrities in any field. They were so cool that both Tony Brevett and Trevor Haughton signed each other’s several pictures which were given to them by Marie Mendoza, Director of 613Photography, a Southern California’s based outstanding Reggae Music photographers, who are YardFlex Magazine’s west coast representative. We can’t wait for their speedy return to the Golden State.
